Tips for Daily Care

In the midst of the hustle and bustle, there are very tiny gaps. And in these gaps lies the land of unhealthy foods, naps, and desperate attempts of getting dressed in a timely manner to get to class. We’re students. Or moms. Or hardworkers in general, and in the middle of it all, we waste the free time, and end up even more behind. 

So I am here to say that I too have fallen victim many-a-times to the grind. I have forgotten to eat, sleep, wash my hair, wash my clothes, and so much more due to working my a$$ off. But I decided enough was enough. 

So, here are some tips to use if you’re a busy buzz buzz bee like me. We got to help each other out, you know. I hope this works out for everyone. 

  • AS. SOON. AS. YOU. GET. HOME.

As soon as you get home, do the thing. The thing you were thinking about on the ride home. Whether it’s “I need to take a shower tonight,” or “I got to print this thing out,” or “I need to read Chapter blah”. As soon as you lock the door behind you and take your shoes off, do that thing. 

This will help you maintain a productive state. I know the feeling of your toes hitting your familiar floors and the urge to just crawl back into bed. I know that feeling well. That feeling is a close friend of mine. But sometimes, you just can’t always text back toxic friends. So block it out, and stay focused. 

If you get everything done as soon as you can, without distracting yourself with relaxation, when the time comes, you’ll be able to actually sleep. You’ll rest easy knowing that whatever you had to do, is already done. You may actually start dreaming again, with the peace of mind you’ll receive. 

  • A little victory is a victory 

Sometimes when people think of self care, they think skincare routine, polished fingernails, a clean room, and blah blah blah. The truth is, you simply can’t do everything everyday. If you don’t feel passionate about skin care, take it easy on the routine. Sometimes self care is as simple as brushing your hair that day. Don’t let the thought of relaxing stress you out. 

  • Eat something 

My main issue when I’m busy is that I don’t eat. I just don’t get hungry. Like I might once throughout the day, but otherwise I’m too worried about due dates and stuff to eat. This is very bad for me. It makes me tired, grumpy, and sick. If you’re like me, I recommend canned foods. 

Things like soups, green beans, and chili helped me out because all I needed was to grab a can out of the pantry and head to school. I didn’t have to wake up extra early and pack an Instagram worthy lunch, or spend a load of money on food. This isn’t always the healthiest option though, so pay attention to what canned foods you’re buying. 

I also recommend cereals. If you’re capable of eating cereal dry, that is the way to go. Or you could also try trail mix. This is an easy thing to prepare, that you can snack on continuously throughout the day to keep you full. 

  • Don’t forget about your passions 

I always tell people that one of the main reasons I started this blog was because I was so caught up in making money and school that I no longer did the things I love. Having a blog with an audience really keeps me motivated to continue being creative, doing the things I really enjoy to share with y’all, and remember what I’m working so hard for anyways. This blog has changed the route of my life in more ways than one. 

I’ve met good friends, figured out who my true friends are, tried new things, and it keeps me connecting to the hobbies and interests I have. Also, hearing back from you gives me encouragement to keep going, and whenever I have a bad day, I always remind myself of the goals of this blog. 

So yes, while making money and hustling is addicting, and it seems like you really are being productive, it can easily steer you away from your true goals. So make sure to carve out some time for reading, or writing, or makeup, or whatever it is that you like to do. This will help you mentally.

  • Sad days are sick days. 

A lot of people don’t understand that mental health is just as important as physical health. So if one morning you wake up and you’re literally in pain with a headache due to all your tasks, go back to sleep. Miss that day of school, or call in sick to work because yes, you are sick. Take some time to calm down, and when you’re ready, get up and finish whatever tasks are bothering you. Usually when I have a ton of homework, or my room is an absolute disaster, or I couldn’t sleep the night before, I just need to take the day off. Stress takes a major toll on you. Take that into account. 

  • Ask for help

Honestly, asking for help is not always easy for me. I like to feel like I have everything under control. I can say, “I did this and this and this with no help”. And that’s great. But you know what happens next? Now I’m exhausted, feel unappreciated, uncared for, and overwhelmed, when really, all I have to do is ask my mom, or dad, or my boyfriend, and they’ll be more than happy to help me. It is okay to admit that you actually don’t have control over every single aspect in life. 

  • You can look like shit 

Now that I run this fashion lifestyle blog, I feel pressure to dress up every single day. And sometimes, what I consider an interesting outfit, others consider trash. And lol, that’s okay. I have a great sense of fashion, but not a great sleep schedule. I don’t have to prove every single day exactly who I am. I can go to my Monday class wearing pajamas, and guess what. I’m still fashionable, just not today. I know a lot of times on self care tips or whatever they’ll tell you to dress up. They say something like “when you look good, you feel good”. And I say that’s it the other way around. When you feel good, you look good. So if you feel good in sweatpants and a T-shirt, or heels and a dress, then honey you are fire everyday of the week.

What’s In My Bag (for back to school)

I’m honestly pretty excited to start school this semester. I got some new supplies, which I’m super eager to use. The past school year was a hot mess. It was just constant running around and forgetting things. It seemed that no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t get organized. And if it wasn’t for me taking duel credit courses this year, I would be behind. So over the summer I decided to buckle down for real this semester and start taking care of my business. 

Having your supplies organized and having a specific system in place can help a lot. In high school, I memorized everything. I have a great visual memory, so reading or rewriting the same phrases over and over again helped me pass all the tests. However, in college, the whole structure is different. A lot of the work is on your own, the note taking is continuous, and since you don’t get to see your instructor every single day of the week, you have to investigate some of the questions on your own. 

I did not realize any of that last year, but I have now and it’s time to redeem myself. So anyways, let’s get into what I’m keeping with me everyday to keep me well structured. 

(I didn’t include my school bag because I’m pretty sure I will be getting a new one.)

The first thing I want to show y’all is this makeup bad that I’m using as a pencil bag. This little egg guy is so inspirational. Whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed in class, I just look at it, and I’m like “yeah, me too buddy”.

And it’s literally the exact size I needed for my pens and prncils. Makeup bag for the win. 

This little rectangular box is kind of like my organization station. I got this pretty thing from Staples, and it comes with post-it notes, an eraser, binder clips, paper clicks and magnets. I really love this, the only problem is that it isn’t secure. The little pieces keep falling out. I’m going to need to do something about that. 

I like having the post-its being the same design. And I used them to label my $0.25 notebooks by class. I got 4 of these spiral notebooks, and a little journal one that I’m turning into a bullet journal for school. Here’s a peep inside:

I’m new to bullet journaling, but with everything going on now, with school and my first job, my somewhat second job, this blog, and just everything else that comes with life, saying I’m busy is an understatement. But I think this would be a cool way to keep me really organized. I want to do an entirely separate post about my bullet journal, so I won’t go too much into detail here.

Not pictured is the tiny stapler I bought myself, my hygiene kit that I bring with me that has an extra toothbrush and hand sanitizer in it, because honestly I just never know where I’m gonna end up these days. I’m thinking of getting more tiny bags to keep things in, because I hate when there’s a bottomless mess in my school bag. I’m hoping to develop a system that works well for me, and to keep this blog up and running on its feet. 

I’m sorry for the late post. I thought I was going to have enough time yesterday to post, but I was mistaken. I know better now, and will keep adjusting to make sure I bring y’all the best content I can muster up!

Adulting No. 3 (Success and a little failure)

Alright, volume 3 on the adulting chronicles. Usually we have adulting successes and failures. However, this time I have a situation with a little bit of both. 

 Soon I will be finishing up my first year of college. Yep, that’s right. My freshman year will be over and it’s back to the lake for me. But this year was not smooth sailing. It was full of bumps, bruises and cringy eyes looking at my grades going “whaattt??”. 

This year alone, I failed a class, dropped a class, changed my major, and passed the rest. So it’s been one hell of a roller coaster ride. I thought this topic would be fun to discuss, because I think it’s something a lot of my readers would relate to. 

Firstly, I want to say that my college experience is NOTHING like my high school experience. In high school, I could do the bare minimum and wow, maintain an A. In college, you should really read your chapters like the syllabus says. High school made me lazy, because I got really good at conning my teachers into thinking I knew exactly what I was talking about. In college, there’s only a lot of tests and a bunch on homework, and just a computer to give you your grades. No face to nod at like “I totally get this.” Just an emotionless computer. 

I went into college thinking it was going to be easier. Less days on campus. Only 4 classes. A breeze. WRONG! College kicked my booty this year, and hopefully sharing what I went through this year will help you not make the same mistakes I did. And if you already have, we can just laugh about them together.

Myth: Online classes are simple and easy.

Online classes are my worst enemy. I took say 4 online classes and every time has been somewhat of a disaster. My history classes were all online, and I barely made it through. I tried really hard to keep up with the deadlines and homework, but it was one of those classes where I’d spend hours doing the homework, but hated it. Then, I took an online Speech class, thinking that’d be a blast. Laugh all you want at me for taking a speech class online, because it was such a stupid idea. My professor put the due dates as a day in May. So this 8 week class all had due dates 2 months away. So my procrastinating self decided to do all the easy stuff and then wait to finish the hard stuff. Turns out that no, those assignments weren’t due in May. They were due at the end of the 8 week class. Suddenly I had an F and a bad taste in my mouth. Now I’m taking a business class online (I switched my major to Business) and Im hoping 3rd time’s a charm. I’ve done really well keeping up with deadlines and doing my work. My teacher won’t make the grades available yet, so I have no idea what my average is, so pray for me.

Myth: Blow off classes can help maintain a good average. 

When I was switching my major and applying for classes, my advisor and I had the idea to put me in an easy science class. Science won’t really be important to me, so I should take a fun one, right? Well turns out my professor knew his class was a blow off class. So he didn’t take any of it seriously. The class he was teaching wasn’t even his specialty. He’d spend more time holding private conversations with one student during lecture about video games than teaching the material. I decided that waking up at 7:00 to get to campus at 8:00, to listen to my teacher’s personal life and history until 9:30, was not worth it. Maybe if it was a night class and I wasn’t forced to wake up early, it wouldn’t be a big deal. Or maybe if the teacher didn’t humiliate a sleeping student in the back for not being awake while he talked on and on about his political views instead of the subject we paid for, I may have stayed. Confusing. The world may never know. 

Advice: 

Despite my hiccups, there have been classes I passed and things I’ve learned. They are good teachers that really do want to see their students succeed and do a lot outside of the classroom to help. I’m going to make sure when scheduling my new classes this upcoming Fall semester, there are a few things I’m going to do. 

  1. Take an in person speech class. 
  2. Never ever ever ever take an 8 a.m. class again. 
  3. Keep better track of my deadlines.
  4. Have more notebooks than just one. 
  5. Bring a jacket to class or something because it’s gets so cold. 

My first year of college didn’t go nearly as planned. I’m hoping my next one will go a lot smoother. Tell me some advice you might have, or some funny stories from your college experiences in the comments.
