Reflecting My Goals For 2018

As January comes to a narrow close, it’s time to reflect on the past month. I thought now would be a good time to do this considering there’s still a good amount left of January for me to work out whatever kinks or knots I may not have gotten to yet this new year.

This is usually the time that our resolutions die off to wither away. We realize that we are who we are. We go back to our old habits. But this post is here to remind you of all the changes you wanted to make, why you wanted to make them, and maybe motivate you to keep on trying. For this post, I’m going to go through the list of resolutions I made for myself at the beginning of this year and see how far I’ve come. I may make this a monthly thing. We’ll see.

  1. The first thing I wanted to do was get rid of my toxic friends. I think I’ve been doing well in this aspect. Of course, this has led to more afternoons alone but I have to say that’s better than many nights miserable.
  2. This leads me to my next resolution: focusing on myself. The divine ability to be able to simply and only care about how I perceive myself. Have I accomplished this? Well, it’s honestly more of a day-to-day thing. Overall, I’d have to say “no”. I’m insecure, what can I say? I’m working on it though.
  3. Paying better attention to my needs has actually been the biggest change I’ve made. I spend plenty of time taking care of myself now. This includes: painting my nails, washing my face often, buying my own fruits and veggies, and being more positive.
  4. I’m still working on building my credit. We all are, right? I haven’t received my Secured Discover credit card yet, but it should be here any day now. Then, I can be a little bit more of an adult.
  5. As silly as it may sound, I made #5 on my list of resolutions to “shop more often”. Have I accomplished this? Well, as you saw in my Back to School (Winter) Haul, I’ve certainly been trying. I’ve been eating out more, buying clothes, books, and soon I’m going to get some new decor for my room. I’m more relaxed now about money than I ever have been before so I’d have to say this is a pretty good accomplishment.
  6. Just like anyone else, I made it a goal to be healthier this new year. I think I still have quite a ways to go, but overall yes, I’ve been much healthier. I’ve been eating better for sure. I’ve been coming up with creative ways to use the produce we have in our house. I may start doing recipes again on my blog if that’s something you may be interested in.
  7. Taking care of the planet is something I’ve always cared about. However, I’m ashamed to say I haven’t made conscious decisions about changing my behavior to better suit the environment. As I was reorganizing my room, I saw how much paper and plastic I throw away. I’m going to get some recycle bins. I need to do some research to figure out what I need to do to take this journey.
  8. Another way I wanted to take care of the planet is by donating. When I was buying my textbooks I had a chance to donate to schools in needs which I happily did. I love being asked to donate when checking out and usually always will. I haven’t put much thought into donating my time yet, but it’s definitely still something I want to be involved in. There’s plenty of places to get involved in my town, and one of the choices I’m most interested in is Habitat for Humanity.
  9. Being content is something my age group struggles with immensely. It’s interesting to talk about being content in a post full of changes I want to make. Excuse the irony, please. I am proud to say I’ve overcome this obstacle quicker than I thought. There are still rough patches I go through where I compare myself to others and feel bad. It’s easier for me to get through those now though. I don’t spend as much time dwelling in that negative state of mind.
  10. Being nicer has also been an attitude change for me. I must say I haven’t been tested like I once was. I’ve been praying a lot for God to help me with my thoughts, and I’ve noticed a huge difference.
  11. Being meaning (I’m sorry, standing up for myself) is a bit of a grey area for me. I know I’ve been a tad bit more assertive. Perhaps this is why I haven’t needed to lash out. Keep in mind I’ve also gotten rid of my toxic friends, so the need to constantly defend myself has died down significantly.
  12. And perhaps the biggest, most monumental change I’ve made is not freaking out. Close family members and friends of mine are familiar with the amount of pressure I put on myself. I know where that roots from finally, which makes it easier for me to slow down and breathe. Now, when I mess up I can shrug and say “I’ll learn from this”. Now, when it takes me longer than expected, I know it’ll really all be worth it.
  13. Drawing. Drawing, I haven’t been doing. I have been painting more, thanks to my boyfriend. That’s just as important, right?
  14. Writing. Now writing, I’ve been investing a lot of time in. Whether it’s here on this blog, or at work, or in my journal, I write nearly every day. I’m proud to say so.
  15. Reading has also been something I’m up to. I started the Harry Potter series and have also been reading poetry books. I’m super excited to keep going.
  16. An important thing I wanted to start making a priority is learning. Learning for me lately is happening organically. I’ve been learning new vocabulary through reading. I’m learning so much from my new job. And also, schooling has officially started up again for the Spring semester so soon, I’ll be learning new stuff by the hour.
  17. Traveling is also something I’ve seen come to life. My boyfriend and I have been taking small trips here, there, and everywhere almost every weekend. They haven’t been long, far away trips, but meaningful travel nonetheless.
  18. And lastly, drinking more water has been taken care of. I’m currently drinking my weight in water as we converse.

 

I encourage you to go over your own list of goals. Dig it out from the bottom of your nightstand and pin it above your light switch. You’re doing great. Don’t give up on yourself!

As you can see, I haven’t accomplished every single thing I wanted to. And that’s okay. Part of this process is seeing who you are and everything you can handle. It’ll take plenty of time to make changes or form habits. Don’t let yourself down. Make time for the important things and everything else will fall into place. Have fun out there.

2018 Bucketlist

Hello everyone.

I hope you’re out there having a wonderful day, and that the new year has been good to you so far. Earlier this year I wrote about some resolutions that I set for myself, and I thought it’d be fun to come up with a little bucket list to go along with it. Now I know I said I would plan less, but I’m not thinking about this as planning. This is simply speaking goals into existence.

 



  1. Travel: I know I put traveling in my resolutions list, but I thought I’d elaborate. In 2018 I’d really like to travel to two places. The first place I’ve been dying to go to is Austin, TX. I don’t know why but part of my soul just wants me to experience that place. The second place I’d really like to visit this year is Paris, France. What little girl doesn’t want to spend a little time in the city of love and romance? That dream simply hasn’t died for me. However, I know that international travel may be a little out of reach. Therefore, a trip to New York or San Francisco would satisfy me just fine.
  2. Writing: Lately, as I’ve gotten more into reading (fulfilling my resolution), I really want to release a book this year. I think it would be awesome to publish a book online. I have a few projects I’ve been working on for the past few months (maybe years). I feel like this is the year to really buckle down and create some interesting stuff. Writing is obviously something I like to do. I’m curious to see how far I can take this passion of mine.
  3. Blog: I have a lot of ideas for this blog. There’s so much I want to create through this little second home of mine. I think one thing I really want to make true comes true is do a collaboration. I love working with my friends, so I could only imagine what it could be like to make more friends in the blogger community. Also, working with brands is a huge far-fetched dream of mine. It’d be cool to start exploring the stepping stones of making something like that happen.
  4. Move: I don’t know when or where I want to move. And I don’t know if I mean move houses or jobs or what. I just know that I’m deathly afraid of getting stuck. Ultimately we’ll see where 2018 takes me, as long as it takes me somewhere.
  5. Read: I want to read at least 24 books this year. So far I’ve read 2. That means there’s only 22 more to go. I guess could tie into the whole resolutions thing, but still. It’s a bucket list thing too.



I know these are mainly just goals I want to accomplish and not crazy major things I want to experience. That’s due to this recent philosophy I’ve started living by. I think experiences should be organic. If you plan out fun things like “flying a kite” or “ride an elephant”, those things become less of an adventure you’re about to take and more of a task you just need to check off.

I’ve been really sticking to moving through life like a drop of water. Just going with the flow and slipping through the cracks, but always finding the most effective way to go about things. For the past two weeks, this mentality has been very helpful for me. I’ve been less stressed out. I naturally am incorporating more of what I love in my daily life. I find myself being less negative. I find myself saying “it’s okay to run just a little behind,” or “I’m fine; I don’t really need to worry about this right now.”

My hands have settled. I can actually enjoy my readings because I’m not thinking of other tasks. I can complete the tasks I do have without worrying about what needs to get done next. I pray this mindset sticks with me throughout the year, especially as the new semester starts. I’m taking 15 hours and I’m a little nervous about how I’m going to keep my head on straight. It’ll be good though. I’ll figure it out.

18 Resolutions for 2018

The new year has started which means its out with the old and in with the new. I love the idea of the new year because it means there’s a fresh start to take by the hands and dance with. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the year that just passed, while also stepping into a recreation of myself.

As most of us can probably agree, 2017 was not a good year to us. What I mean by this is looking back, I KNOW great things happened this past year but there’s just an overall melancholy feeling hovering over the numbers of 2017. It even sounds unlucky to me now. Like maybe hotel rooms like start skipping 17 or it’ll be the new “Monday, the seventeenth” or something dramatic like that. There just seemed to be an overwhelming overload of bad news, tragic crisis, and feeling super small. Are you feeling me here? Am I coming out of left field?

Anyways, that being said I wanted to highlight some of the better parts of my year. Disclaimer: this is in no way to brag or boast, but I have accomplished plenty of things I’m proud of and there’s nothing wrong with that.

  1. The first thing that pops into my mind on the list of accomplishments has to do with my blog. In the middle or so of 2017, I was awarded the opportunity to have ads on my blog. This means my site had to go under a transfer, which turned out to be the best push forward ever. I can do things on here that I always imagined. It was the first step in validating this dream of mine.
  2. The second biggest thing that happened was buying my car. My first car pooped out on me, I guess somewhere in late July or early August. By the grace of God, the car I have now was already in my sights. I was out and about driving again once the weekend was over.
  3. My family and I moved out of our little apartment into an awesome house. This just happened recently, as most of you would know from previous blog posts. We love our new location. It’s been a good change.
  4. I got to visit my family in New Orleans at least 3 times over the past year. I love going back to my roots. It’s always a big deal for me and my brother to go back and explore the city we adore, while see our family we miss everyday.
  5. Lastly, I started a new blog at my job!!! Okay, so this may have been the most pivotal point in my life of 2017. I worked on a proposal to start a blog for about two weeks before introducing my idea to the owner. I don’t think anyone understands how much of a big deal this was for me. This was the second step in turning this devoted dream of mine into a tangible career. This is perhaps what I”m most excited about for the start of 2018.

Okay, so as you can see in 2017 I stayed on my grind to get things done. However, there were a few things I couldn’t quite grasp, and some habits I didn’t really set into place. I know I did everything I could to make 2017 successful. Still though, I find myself thinking that I’m moving at such a slow pace. Everyone has their own paths to success, and the hardest part of creating your own is looking at your neighbors’ to see who’s in first place.



I’ve learned from 2017 that there are certain ways I hold myself back, and there are some things I don’t prioritize that I really should. And thus, the list of resolutions begins!!!

  1. The first thing I want to do in 2018 is get rid of toxic friends. This past year I really tried my hardest to form new friendships and maintain the ones I thought I had. This turned out to be a one-sided ordeal. I found myself lonelier than ever. So I will go into 2018 with a tiny protective chip on my shoulder. Some may say that’s not the best way to start the new year, but those people probably have reliable friends.
  2.  Focus on myself more. 2017 started the internal battle within myself of constantly wondering if I cared what other people thought, or cared about myself more. But I’ve decided that I can do both, but worry about my happiness more often.
  3. A key factor to a better me in 2018 is paying more attention to my need of self care. Somehow I got into the habit of relying on others so much that its now hard for me to be alone for long periods of time. I also get embarrassed when I go out alone because I feel like others will think I’m a loser. Isn’t that ridiculous? I will start spending more time with myself and become my own friend this year. You have to be your own biggest fan, right?
  4. I need to build my credit. This February I turn 20 and soon it will be time to be an adult. I know I have a good credit score, but I need to build credit history. I want people to look at my score and be like “Dang, she’s responsible AF”. It’ll make me feel good.
  5. This might sound a little reverse, but I actually want to shop more often. People who know me know how frugal I am. Saving money was always fun for me for some reason, even as a child. But it’s gotten to the point where it’s borderline obsessive. I’m almost in need of an intervention. Saving money is a great thing, until it means you’re not eating for hours because you’re too cheap to spend $5.00. Also, shopping is very therapeutic to me. It gives me a deep new inspiration every time, and that’s something I can’t afford to limit myself on these days.
  6. As cliche as it sounds, 2018 is the year I want to be healthier. Being healthy physically is something that I sort of shrug off because I have a natural slim body type. These past few months of 2017 I’ve been going to the gym to run and also tone up some. I can tell the difference between when I go to the gym often and when I don’t. Going to the gym is an accomplishment that usually only takes me about half an hour or so. It lets me know that I really am doing my best for my body.
  7. Being nicer to the planet has also been on my mind. I love thinking that I’m conscious of my footprint on this planet, but I’m really not. Sure, I’ll take tiny steps to decrease certain things, but overall I’m still a selfish human. I don’t know of any recycling places here where I live, but that doesn’t mean I should just give up on that. And going vegan might not be realistic for me, but I could limit myself on steak probably. I just want to be able to feel better about my place on this world. I bought a reusable shopping bag, so I’ve started the journey slowly.
  8. Another way I could help the planet is by donating. I like to donate when I get the chance. I always appreciate it when they ask me at the register. I have no idea how much I’ve donated in the past, but I can be confident that in 2018 I will still be donating a little here and there. Really, I want my resolution to be donating my time. I want to volunteer and really make a difference to someone face to face.
  9. In the new year, a dramatic and important change I need to make is learning how to be more content with where I am and how I’m doing. It’s easy to feel like I could be doing better, or things would be easier elsewhere but that really never helps the situation that I’m in. It develops this damaging mindset that no matter what, I’ll never be satisfied. That’s not who I want to be.
  10. I want to be nicer. I think I’m pretty nice person. People tell me I’m sweet and thoughtful. I’m glad that people think that about me, but I also know I tend to be really negative. Whether it’s when someone hurts my feelings, or I’m having a bad day, I’m honestly just a bitch. That needs to stop.
  11. However, I want to be meaner as well. I don’t think I’ve ever met a single person with the goal of being meaner. Let me explain. I know I have a sharp tongue, I get that. But I never have a sharp tongue at the right moment. If someone deserves it, you better believe I have no remorse in whatever I have to say. But I want to have the guts to say them. If I can say whatever I need to say in the moment, there’d be no reason to be that way later. I’d be mean and prove a point, go about my day unbothered, so therefore be nicer to others. Right? I guess a better way to put it would be to stand up for myself.
  12. A huge goal of mine for the new year is to stop freaking out so much about time. I never feel like I have enough time. I feel like everything is rushing at me like a train and I’m just paralysed my the sound. But the truth is, I’m actually on the train, and it’s called LIFE. And I”m so busy worrying about the destination, I never look out the window. The destination will still be there, even if I take a few pit stops and go sightseeing.

Okay, so that was the first round of my soul-searching really deep and meaningful resolutions, but what about the other stuff?

  1. Drawing more has been on the tips on my fingers lately. I really want to, but I’m never inspired. I need to just doodle or something.
  2. The same thing goes for writing more. I used to write SO MUCH and now it’s hard for me to even pick up a pen. I’ve started to at least write in my journal as often as I can. This has helped me slow down and reflect on the day I just had, rather than worrying about the next.
  3. I also want to spend more time reading. Reading helps me write. I don’t know why, but it does. I’m setting the goal of reading one book a week. That should be easy for me. We’ll just have to see how it goes. I really like poetry books right now, and biographies?
  4. Something else I found inside me was the yearning to learn. I honestly really love learning. I find mostly everything in this world extremely interesting. In 2018, I want to learn about more things. Whether it’s watching documentaries or going out and experiencing something new, I want to be doing it.
  5. Along with learning, traveling also would be a huge new goal for me. They go hand in hand. By traveling I don’t necessarily mean going international, or even across the country. I just want to go exploring more. I want to visit more art museums, write my name all over the place. I’m smiling just thinking about it. I could learn, travel, shop, and write about it all.
  6.  Lastly, in 2018, I want to drink more water. I hate the taste of water. It’s so disgusting. But it’s good for me.
